Grades will be calculated according to the following criteria:
  • Tests (25%)- Includes all written and playing tests.
  • Class Participation (40%)- Includes worthwhile participation in all band activities and any unexcused class absences. This grade is based on the following criteria:
    1. Any written work done during class - worksheets, etc.
    2. Having the proper equipment for class (instrument, pencil, music, reeds).
    3. Having a positive, cooperative attitude during class.
    4. Following classroom rules and regulations.
    5. Promptness to class.

  • Practice Rubrics/Classwork (10%)
    • Practice Rubrics once each grading period
    • Any written work done during class
  • Concert Attendance (25%)- Includes attendance at all required band functions.
  • Please note - band concerts should not be treated as REWARDS. They are REQUIRED. Keeping students from attending concerts as a punishment only lowers their grade in band (the highest nine weeks grade they can get for an unexcused absense is a 75).
  • Check the Calendar Page for all performance dates!
  • Field Trips - Students who have a D or F in band for the grading period will not be allowed to attend band field trips.

Good discipline in the classroom is a must in order to have effective rehearsals. If students are talking, they are not playing their instruments. In order to maintain good classroom control, the following steps will be taken when a student displays improper behavior.
  • First Offense- The student receives a verbal warning.
  • Second Offense- The student will be bounced to another class.
  • Third Offense- The student will be sent to ISS or the office and written up in A.B.E.

Students will receive "Cane Cash" as rewards for exceptional behavior, performance, or improvement. They can "cash in" for classroom rewards or school-wide rewards.

** In cases of severe offenses, the above system will be bypassed and the student will automatically receive a conduct referral.

Attendance and participation are vital to the success of the band program. If one child is absent, it affects the entire band. Band members are required to attend ALL scheduled rehearsals and performances, EVEN THOSE THAT OCCUR AFTER SCHOOL HOURS. Unexcused absences will not be tolerated, and will be handled as follows:
  • Class or Rehearsal Absence- The student will receive a "0" Participation Grade.
  • Performance Absence- 25% of the final grade comes from concert attendance. A "O" will be given for any unexcused absence. All absences, with the exception of last minute emergency or illness, must be excused by the band director before the concert. Two unexcused absences will result in loss of performance and trip priviledges and consideration for dismissal from the band program.

NOTE: Please understand that attendance at concerts is MANDATORY and is a LARGE part of the student's grade. Concert attendance should not be used by parents as a punishment (i.e. saying "You didn't do your chores so you can't go to the concert"). That would be like saying the child couldn't take their Math or Reading EOG because they didn't do their chores.

* Students who have a D or F in band for their current grading period may not be allowed to perform in concerts. They will receive an alternate writing assignment.

Students wear the Holly Shelter Band Uniform at all concerts unless otherwise instructed.

  • Holly Shelter Band Shirt
  • Khaki Pants
  • Brown, Black, or White Shoes

Students will wear this uniform for all concerts every year they're in band. All shirts are adult sizes, and be sure to order one big enough for your child to grow into!

  • Before any student boards a bus, a signed permission slip and the student information form (found on the home page) must be on file with the band director.
  • The band director reserves the right to deny any student admission to any field trip due to improper behavior, unexcused absence from a performance, or grades of C, D or F in band.
  • The band director reserves the right to perform a search of all luggage, book bags, and clothing of students before and during a field trip. Any searches will be done in the presence of at least one other adult. This is to ensure the safety of all students and chaperones on the trip.
  • For the End-of-Year arts trip - if a student drops out of the trip within 4 weeks of the date of the trip, no refund will be given. By this time, we will have already paid for the tickets and the buses, both of which are non-refundable.
  • Per school policy, students who owe cafeteria charges or media center fines must pay them in full before being allowed to attend field trips.

  • When scheduling doctor's appointments, especially orthodontist appointments or any dental procedures, please be mindful of performance dates. Please try to set those appointments after a performance or during a break from school. Getting braces is a big adjustment, and being able to play a wind instrument after getting braces on or off takes time and practice. It could also be painful for the student at first.
  • When participating in other activities (rec sports, scouts, etc) that require your child to be present, please check that calendar against the band calendar. If there is a perceived conflict, please communicate that with the director of the other activity as well as the band director. We may be able to come up with a solution that works for all involved.
  • When scheduling family trips and vacations, please check the band calendar. While I understand that things happen at the last minute that are beyond your control, the calendar is issued and available online in August so that we can avoid scheduling conflicts.

  • Every band membershould bring a pencil, instrument, music and proper equipment to every class.
  • Chewing gum, food, and drinks are not allowed in the bandroom or rehearsal aread. Water is permitted.
  • Instrument maintenance or supplies needed shoule be taken care of at the beginning of class.
  • All talking should end when the director steps onto the podium.
  • Students should sit with proper posture to play.

  • Students should be in the appointed place at the appointed time for warm up and roll check. One point will be deducted from the student's grade for every minute (s)he is late.
  • All students must bring music to the concert.
  • Any instrument maintenance should be done before the concert.
  • Students are required to stay for the entire concert.
  • Students should behave in an orderly manner while on stage and in the audience. Students who are behaving inappropriately will be asked to leave the concert, and their grade affected accordingly.
  • Chewing gum, candy, food, and drinks are not permitted in the auditorium.
  • Any student with a D or F in band may not be allowed to participate in the concert and will be required to submit an alternate writing assignments.
